Meet from 12 noon onwards for lunch/drinks at the Kingfisher, Chew Valley Road, Greenfield, Saddleworth, OL3 7AE. Walk starts at 1.30pm, about 4½ miles to the Saddleworth war memorial on the so-called “Pots and Pans” hill overlooking Greenfield. There is a fairly gradual ascent of about 250 metres (820 ft.), with a sharper descent.
Directions: Take the A670 Ashton to Huddersfield road and at the A669 in Greenfield turn south (right if approaching from Manchester), following signs to “Village Centre” and Greenfield station, which will then pass by on your right as you go downhill. Follow this road as it bends very sharply to the left at the bottom, the pub is soon on the left before Tesco’s. There is a sizeable car park at the pub and unrestricted parking on one side of Chapel Road, the unsigned road on the left immediately before the pub.
Public transport: An hourly train service on the Huddersfield line from Manchester Piccadilly leaves Piccadilly at 17 minutes past the hour and takes 19 minutes to Greenfield. Buses 350 and 355 also pass the pub.
Every Sunday throughout the year, Manchester IVC has a walk which starts off at 1.30 pm prompt, and is usually 4-5 miles …. something like that. We meet at a local pub or restaurant and the walk will either start from there or somewhere nearby. As well as the walk itself, there is the option to meet for a meal or a drink before the walk and/or after the walk for those who wish. You will be able to see from the location and the walk description whether or not the walk is going to be suitable for you – but the idea is that all on the walk will benefit from enjoyable exercise and a good social.
Please make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and terrain – the walk leader will always have the right to decide on the day if someone is not appropriately dressed. The walk leaders are all members of the club and are volunteers.
There are car share options available, so if you are stuck for a lift, just add a note here and we’ll do our level best to help.
There are usually between 10 to 20 walkers dependent on the weather and location – so by all means come along and join in. It’s a great gateway to the rest of the club, you can talk to new and established members and find out about the full range of events we have on in Manchester every month.
The walks are very popular, so please RSVP if you plan to attend and we’ll make sure you’re made to feel very welcome !
