AIVC Event – Winchester Science Cafe : “Space Debris”

Join Basingstoke IVC Group science enthusiasts at this web talk by Janusz Adamson. The subject of this evenings talk is “Space Debris”.

Regrettably, the public health situation still means it is likely to be some time before Winchester Science Cafe can resume live meetings. Thanks to all those who responded to the Win Cafe Sci question about going online, both for and against. We have decided to try out some online events, using Zoom, a popular and well tested platform for online meetings, https://www.zoom.us/ , which many of you may be familiar with by now.

If it is successful, we may continue to broadcast talks from the Discovery Centre so that if people prefer not to be in a room with a large number of people they can still join in.

SUMMARY
We have been putting objects into orbit for over 60 years. But we haven’t been so good at removing them again. Starlink is in the process of putting thousands of miniature satellites into low Earth orbit to provide ubiquitous internet coverage. It’s getting crowded up there! And minute fragments at orbiting speeds can cause massive damage to fragile structures. What does the future hold, and what are the risks and remedies?

To keep numbers manageable, you will need to book via Eventbrite:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/winchester-cafe-scientifique-space-debris-with-janusz-adamson-tickets-106351600500

Information about using Zoom will be supplied with your booking. You will need to install the Zoom app to your computer, tablet or Smartphone. You only need to book one place for each computer, so if you are sharing a screen with someone in your house, you only need one. We are keeping the allocation of tickets quite small to keep it manageable, so please book yours asap to avoid disappointment.

For people unable to get tickets, or not quite sure about Zoom yet, you will be able to watch the event live on Youtube at:

https://youtu.be/aeqPyxY_G78 .

If you want to, you can participate in chat if you are signed in to Youtube with your Google account.

We will open the Zoom meeting from 7pm to give people ample time to get connected and settled in. We may move people into small groups if it gets too noisy.

Our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/wincafesci/?source_id=1457090591178602 provides an opportunity to share ideas and keep in touch. You are encouraged to post interesting science links and to comment or discuss.
