SUMMARY
Our immune system is absolutely vital in protecting us infection with external aggressors including viruses, bacteria and parasitic worms. However, sometimes it makes a mistake and identifies innocuous substances, such as grass or tree pollen as aggressors and mounts a defensive attack. One such attack is allergy. I will use allergic rhinitis (hay fever) to illustrate the basic mechanism of an allergic attack.
Two hundred years ago allergy was almost unheard of. Today almost 40% of the population suffers from one kind of allergy or another. The rate is still increasing. But why? I will examine some possibilities including, our hygienic living style, indoor living, stress, outdoor pollution and global warming.
