About us

Our History

Manchester IVC has been in existence since the 1950s and is a member of the Association of IVCs (AIVC). This is a national network of independent clubs originally set up to provide social, recreational and cultural opportunities for students and graduates. Nowadays, membership is open to all those interested in the events we organise, and we welcome people from all walks of life.

There are about 40 IVC groups throughout Great Britain, with a total of around 3,000 members. All IVC groups are voluntary organisations run on a not-for-profit basis. As a member of Manchester IVC, you are entitled to attend inter-club events advertised on the AIVC website. In 2019, these include Swanage Blues Festival in March, Bird-watching in Norfolk in May, the Edinburgh Festival in August, and a weekend in Blackpool in October.

Each IVC Club is organised for their members by their members with support from a local committee elected annually. This allows the people in each club to manage and promote membership of their group in the ways that suit their particular circumstances.

New Members

New members are always welcome. The annual subscription of £10 covers the administrative costs of running the club (e.g. website hosting charges), plus third-party liability cover for all our events. There are no additional attendance charges for members, other than any room hire or ticket charges, and all events are arranged by club members on a volunteer basis.

We always welcome ideas, suggestions and offers of help! So if you would like to lead a local walk or event, organise a weekend away, publicise our events, or would just like to see more IVC events in your area, let us know!
